One of the easier ways, if you don't mind players being able to see the defense scores, is to just type them into the description tab. That way, you just double-click the creature and look under its portrait. Alternatively, you could type the Fort, Ref, and Will defenses in the actual 3.5 Fort, Ref, and Will save boxes, and just Edit (E key) the monster to check the scores whenever a PC attacks it.

Skills
You will need to modify your skill list. To do this, open the skills.txt file in your d20Pro\dm\res\ManuallySpecified folder. Add the following to the end of the list, and you will have the 4th edition skills, while keeping your 3.5 skills. You may be tempted to delete all of the 3.5 skills if you intend to stick only to 4th edition, do not delete all of the 3.5 skills, as d20pro still checks legacy skills when you hit activate the skill menu.

Acrobatics (4E)|DEX
Arcana (4E)|INT
Athletics (4E)|STR
Bluff (4E)|CHA
Diplomacy (4E)|CHA
Dungeoneering (4E)|WIS
Endurance (4E)|CON
Heal (4E)|WIS
History (4E)|INT
Insight (4E)|WIS
Intimidate (4E)|CHA
Nature (4E)|WIS
Perception (4E)|WIS
Religion (4E)|INT
Stealth (4E)|DEX
Streetwise (4E)|CHA
Thievery (4E)|DEX

The (4E) is optional, but it makes it much easier to find the skills. For now, you may want to use them from the character sheet tab, as the skill window doesn't automatically populate them into groups (they are listed under ALL).

Feats and Initiative
Feats are very easy, since you just edit the feats.txt file. See Adding Custom Data for more information. One thing you WILL want to do is have support for the new method for Initiative. That is, Initative now goes up for all creatures at a rate of +1 per 2 levels. So a 10th level PC or monster with a 14 Dex (+2) would have an initative modifier of +7. The easiest way to have this calculated in the software is to create Initiative feats that you can apply to the monster to get the desired initiative. Keep in mind that these feats add to your Dex modifier to create your final initiative modifier. Copy and paste the following into your feats.txt file in your d20Pro\dm\res\ManuallySpecified folder:

InitModifier|*initiative +1|1
InitModifier|*initiative +2|2
InitModifier|*initiative +3|3
InitModifier|*initiative +4|4
InitModifier|*initiative +5|5
InitModifier|*initiative +6|6
InitModifier|*initiative +7|7
InitModifier|*initiative +8|8
InitModifier|*initiative +9|9
InitModifier|*initiative +10|10

That will give you ten feats, ranging from +1 to +10 to initative. They stack, so you should have endless combinations to work with.

Powers
At will, per encounter, and daily powers have found new support in 1.12.5. You can now create special abilities for creatures in their ability tab. Double-click on the creature icon and then choose Abilities under their portrait. Keep in mind that, because this is a 3.5 product, special abilities are not tied to attacks. Many powers will be resolved in the Attack section. Only use these for tracking uses or effects that have a duration.

For example, let's say that you are playing a Warlock and your powers are:

At Will: Eldritch Blast, Eyebite

Per Encounter: Witchfire

Per Day: Curse of the Dark Dream

Here is what you could do for each:

Eldritch Blast: Simple at will power. Program the attack into the Attack tab on the creature character sheet. Make it a ranged attack that deals 1d10+? force damage (where ? is your charisma modifier). I might name it as: Eldritch Blast (vs. Ref) to make it easier to adjucate.

Eyebite: Eyebite deals 1d4+cha psychic damage and makes you invisible to the target. For this, I would also make a basic attack in the attack tab, make it ranged, force, and name it Eyebite (vs. Will). The invisibility can easily be remembered mentally. We could just send a tell in the OOC channel to help us remember (see chat).

Witchfire: Since this is an Encounter power, I might want to make a Special Ability for it. Double-click the warlock, click on the Abilites. Here is where you might be tempted to put the attack in. Don't, since you need to roll to hit with it (and these effects use Saves). Instead, input an effect that gives -4 to hit for 1 round and be done. Now put the attack in the Attack tab on the character sheet. Make it deal 2d6+x force damage, name it Witchfire (vs. Ref) and hit done. Now when you use your witchfire, use the attack to determine hit and damage, then the DM can burn through your ability and apply the effect to the target if you hit.

Curse of the Dark Dream: same as witchfire, above. Program an attack into the character sheet, then make a Daily power in the abilities tab. The power doesn't really need an effect - but you might consider changing the target's team color just to make the unit border different (and easy to spot).

Healing Surges,Second Wind, andAction Points
Use the Abilities tab to set up special abilities. Double click on your creature and click on the Abilities tab beneath their portrait.

Healing surges: just set it as a Per Day ability with X / X charges (where X is how many healing surges you get. You could apply a healing effect to them, but you could just burn them and manually heal the PCs with the H key.

Second Wind:a Per Init power that heals the appropriate amount and that grants +2 to AC and Saves (Fort, Ref, Will) for 1 round.

Action Points: Use items! The DM can give an item to the PCs at any time, and can destroy them at will. The DM can even drop items onto the map and have the players pick them up if they are adjacent (P key). I use the following icon for action points:

d20pro

Welcome to the d20pro support wiki. Large maps, such as 2+ MB jpgs or those with over 2,000 pixel dimensions, can cause performance issues in many Java based applications. The Plain English reason for this is that the Java Run-time Environment has a memory setting that is static, and to be more compatible with everyone's systems, the application default is usually set fairly low, like 256 MB for example. So while your system may have 1 GB or more of RAM, the program will not use any more than is set in the default heap size.

Fear not!

User Generated Content

Please post links here to any custom content that you have created. With d20pro, you can map out walls and doors and paint textures in either jpg, gif, or png format. Textures are painted in a tile-by-tile process, so you cannot create organic shapes such as circles or rounded walls. Creating your maps with d20pro is ideal if you need a map very quickly for your game or want traditional "Graph Paper" styled maps.

Draw

Clicking on the Draw button in the bottom right corner of the screen will pull up the drawing panel on the right side of your window. The buttons are as follows:

Wall: this lets you drag out wall sections in 5ft or longer segments. These are currently limited to straight lines, but can be drawn at any angle. Lines drawn have their coordinates listed in the panel to the right, in order of construction.

Door: Doors are fairly straightforward. Simply click & drag from point to point to create one. Dragging across multiple squares creates double doors.

Eraser: Drag this across lines or doors to delete them. You can also delete elements by selecting them in the coordinates list on the right panel and clicking the Delete Selected button or the delete key on your keyboard.

Paint
Selecting the paint feature brings up a palette of colors that you can use to paint in tiles. This feature is useful for simple maps or for drawing attention to sections or marking squares for targets.

Click & drag the cursor to paint multiple tiles. Holding down the CTRL button while clicking on the map will select the color or texture of the tile you clicked on. This is similar to the eyedropper tool on various graphic programs. You can add custom images to the library by placing them into folders within your d20pro\dm\res\FLR directory. Your custom images may be in GIF, JPG, or PNG format, and should be square for best results. They can be any size, but would be ideally no more than 200 x 200 pixels. See our Tips & Tricks section for recommended software or techniques for preparing image files.

Remember that image files in this directory are used for both tiles and Scale (see below). This is also the folder where your maps will go, so it is recommended that you organize your textures and maps effectively. You should make descriptive sub-folders for these.

Click & drag the cursor to paint multiple tiles. Most custom content is easily added by modifying the text files located in the folder:

d20pro\\dm\res\ManuallySpecified

There you will find four text files (classes, skills, feats, spells). Before you make any modifications to these, make backups and store them somewhere, like in a folder called Originals, for example.

Custom Feats
Editing feats is pretty straightforward. Just type in the names of your new feats. There are a few things to keep in mind though:

Prefixes & Suffixes: If you open the feats file, you will notice that most feats have the Generic| prefix before them. For any feats that do not modify initiative, it's recommended that you keep that prefix. Feats that affect Initiative have the InitModifier| prefix followed by a |# suffix where the # is a numerical modifier.

Example: If you were to add the Thug feat from the Player's Guide to Forgotten Realms (which grants a +2 to intimidate & initiative), you would enter it as InitModifier|Thug|2 The only feats that currently have automated processes associated with them are those that affect Initiative

List Order: Feats display in d20pro in the order listed, so if you don't add to the list in an alphabetical fashion, your feat list will be unorganized in the program. You can use this to your advantage, though. See examples.

Naming Tips: These are just some of the naming conventions I use. Your mileage may vary.

I use a minus before the names of any feats that are 1st level or regional feats, so they don't get confused with general feats. Such as: Generic|-Arcane Schooling

I use an asterisk after any feat that is not core, just so I know that it's from another source. Example: Generic|Combat Tactician*

You could also change the existing feats to reflect their role a bit more, such as adding Metamagic before appropriate feats. Example: Generic|Metamagic - Empower Spell

Custom Spells
Spells are pretty basic. There is no special coding or extraneous characters that are necessary for them to work, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

List Order: Spells do not have to be listed in any order, making this easy to customize and keep your modifications separate from the original list.

Non-core Distinction: If you want to distinguish custom or expansion book spells from your core spells in character lists, you might want to use a special character. I use an asterisk at the end of non-core spells, just so I know. Example: Blade of Blood*

Adding to Class Lists: The spells.txt file is the master spell list for d20pro, but you STILL have to modify class spell lists to include any additional spells that you enter here. For example, if I input Blade of Blood here, I need to add it to any relevant class spell lists in the classes.txt file (such as cleric, wizard, etc).

Custom Classes

This can be the most complicated of the custom content, but only for spellcasting classes. Regardless of the order they appear in the txt file, classes will be listed in d20pro in alphabetical order. Things to consider:

For the most part, you can look at the current classes to gain an understanding of syntax. Classes start with a capitalized entry of ## CLASS: <name>. That's to make them easier to find.

Next we have CreatureClass=<name> The name listed here is what displays in the class list within the program. Creative naming conventions can control how your classes appear, such as using NPC_Adept and PRC_Blackguard to keep NPC an prestige classes grouped in the list.

Next is AttackRate=<#> where the number indicated the rate of progression in Base Attack Bonus. There are only 3 rates in D&D 3.5. Note that you are not technically limited to the rates below, as d20pro accepts any numerical rate.

Poor: used by wizards, sorcerers, and commoners. This advances at a 1/2 rate, or .5

Moderate: used by clerics, rogues, monks, etc. This advances at 3/4 rate, or .75

Good: used by fighters, paladins, barbarians, etc. This advances at 1/1 rate, or 1

Right now, d20pro does not have support for base save progression, so the GoodSaves=<type> doesn't have a real function. Saving throws in D&D advance in two tiers - good and poor. Close attention to save progression for any class in the rulebooks reveals that it has only two possible values for saves. Clerics for example have good Fort and Will saves, and poor Reflex saves. This line denotes those saves that advance at a good rate. It's advised that you fill this out, in case future support is enabled.

Spellcasters
At this point, you are done unless your custom class is a spellcaster, at which you need to enter in additional blocks.

Spellcaster= ............ This instructs d20pro to use a specific spellcaster template and ability modifier. To make this easier, copy & paste a caster type that matches your class.

Example: If I wanted to enter information for the Duskblade class, I might look at the sorcerer, since both are spontaneous casters. However, I would modify the last part (the ability modifier) to be INT since duskblades use that ability modifier for bonus spells. My final entry would be:

SpellCaster=com.mindgene.d20.plugin.dnd.creature.SpellCasterTemplate_Sorceror|INT

#SPELLS AVAILABLE and Spells<#>=<name> : This section starts the spell list. Each spell level is listed on a separate line and starts with Spells# where # is the spell level, then = then the spell names separated by pipe characters | (shift+backslash).

IMPORTANT!! Spell names MUST match exactly with the names in the spells.txt file. So Blade of Blood will not appear if you have the spell listed as Blade of Blood* (with asterisk) in the spells.txt file. Also, keep in mind that spells from core books are listed with their SRD names, so if you add a class with Melf's Acid Arrow, you should rename it to Acid Arrow, since that's the name in the spells.txt file.

This can be a tedious process, but once completed, it's done for good. If you are feeling helpful, please post your content here!

#SPELLS PER DAY and PerDay<#>=<#>: This section starts the spells per day table. Simply follow the conventions for other classes. Separate numbers with the pipe character |

For spontaneous classes, don't forget to add the third section, #SPELLS KNOWN. This controls how many spells the character knows at the appropriate level.

Custom Skills
You shouldn't have to add skills very often, but they are listed with the format of: Skill Name|ABILITY. In fact, most of the time you might find that it's necessary to use pre-made maps from modules or create them yourself using various software titles. Once you find them, importing them into d20pro is a fairly basic process.

Step 1: Get the Map
You can find free maps or make your own.

Finding Free Maps

For Specific Adventures

WOTC, for example, has Art & Map galleries for many of their publications, like Expedition to Castle Ravenloft.

Paizo also includes downloadable maps for some of their Dungeon Magazine adventures.

Prester’s Maps and Chart Emporium is a site dedicated to sharing the work of Dungeon Crawl Classics fans. On this page you’ll find beautifully rendered battlemaps for use while playing DCC adventures. Most are created using the map-making software Dundjinni (see below).

For Non-Specific Maps

Dundjinni's website hosts a forum where users of this incredible map-making program post their art and maps. By default any art or maps posted on Dundjinni's map forum are available for others to use, unless specified by the author. The maps on this forum are in a word: Amazing.

WOTC has a Map-a-Week page with some good generic maps.

Sometimes you might stumble upon amateurs or professionals who have made thier maps available to the public. One example is the Educated Gamer, where you can find maps of the original T1-4 modules, and other maps.

If you own a module, you might want to scan the maps for personal use. Just remember to scan them using a fairly high resolution so that you will have good quality maps. This method is likely to involve a bit more post-work.

Creating Your Own Maps

Hands down, one of the most powerful and user-friendly software titles out there for making maps is Dundjinni. For a reasonable price, you get access to a software that allows you to paint a map with floor textures, draw walls, and stamp objects - all quickly and effectively. You can buy art packs for more creative power, or mine the thousands of unbelievable posts on their forum of user art. Most of the art on the forums (textures, maps, objects) is available for download and immediate use in your map projects. You really need to see the maps created with it to believe it.

Another good software is Campaign Cartographer 3. It has a steep learning curve (especially since it uses more of a CAD approach) but produces very nice maps.

You could also use graphic programs like Photoshop, GIMPshop (free), or various paint programs like ArtRage (free) or Painter.

Step 2: Using the Map With d20Pro

Once you obtain your map graphic file, you need to import it to d20pro, create a blank map, and insert the graphic onto the blank map, scaled correctly.

Importing Map Graphics into d20pro's Library
There is not currently an import command for map graphic files (jpg, png, etc). The Import button in the map library is for importingcomplete map files that have been previously exported from d20pro. To use a map graphic, you need to place your image into the Tile & Scale Library.

Using your operating system's file browser (not d20pro), copy your map graphic file. This should be a common graphic file format, like bmp, gif, png, or jpg. Ideally, this should be a JPG file.

Navigate to your d20pro folder. In Windows, this is usually c:\d20pro. From there, proceed to the \dm\res\FLR folder.

Paste your map graphic into this folder, or a subfolder of this one.

You may want to create many subfolders under d20pro\dm\res\FLR in order to keep your maps organized and running smoothly.

Start up d20Pro and click on the Scale button. Browse to the location of the graphic file.

Note: If you are already in the program, click on the Options button, then the Judge button in the Options pane. Finally, click on Update Resources. Then click Scale and navigate to the proper folder.

Create a Blank Map
Once you have the map in your image library (accessible from Tile or Scale), you can now insert it into a d20pro map. First, you need to create a blank map.

Click on Map, then New

Insert the dimensions of the new map in 5ft square increments. Thus a 40x80 ft map would be an 8x16 square grid.

If your graphic has gridlines already, just cound the number of 5ft squares.

If does not have gridlines, determine a size or dimension by estimating or looking at the resolution of the file. Hovering your mouse pointer over an image file in Windows will revewal the image dimensions. You are free to choose the overall scale. There are several things you can do here.

Select Creatures: You can select creatures simply by clicking on them. You can select multiple creatures by clicking and dragging a box around creatures. You may also CTRL+click individual creatures for more group precision.

Move Creatures: Simply click & drag a creature you control to move it. To move a group, click & drag the one of the selected creatures while holding the SHIFT key.

Pan Map: You can move maps around by right clicking on a map and dragging your mouse while you hold the right mouse button.

Zoom in or out: You can click on the zoom buttons (top right of map), use ALT and +/- keys, or roll the wheel on your mouse.

Close Map (DM): Open maps will be displayed by tabs at the top of the map pane. Close them by clicking on the x on the tab. You will be asked to save a copy, overwrite, or discard changes.

Limbo (DM): Limbo is a holding bin for creatures that you wish to keep off the map, but still in play. It's different than the library in that you can keep many instances of the same creature type, and Limbo retains current effects and attributes of the creatures. To send a creature to Limbo, right-click on it and choose Location then Move to Limbo. Drag and drop the creatures from Limbo to place them onto the map.

Broadcast (DM): This button allows the DM to broadcast the map, refreshing the views of all logged in Players. You may also Broadcast by pressing the F5 key.

The Initiative Panel

The Initiative Panel is a thin strip on the left hand side of the Map Region. It lists all creatures currently on the map as well as any ongoing effects, and it also keeps track of combat rounds. It's divided into an active section and a passive section. Creatures in the active section will be included in the initiative order when combat begins. Creatures in the passive section are considered out of combat order.

When a creature is placed into initiative, d20pro automatically rolls that creature's initiative. D20pro adds Dexterity and the Improved Initiative feat, if applicable. Other modifiers are currently not supported without customizing the feat list.
